How To Organize Your Tools Without Feeling Overwhelmed

How To Organize Your Tools Without Feeling Overwhelmed

March 7, 2024 By Fatherhood Factor Team Leave a Comment

Every father needs their tools and their workstation for fixing things around the home and tinkering with DIY projects. If your tools and workshop have fallen into disorder, it can seem daunting to try and get it back in order. Below, we’ll show you how to organize your tools without feeling overwhelmed!

First, Inventory Everything

The first thing you should do to get organized is to inventory every tool and supply you have in your workshop. This may seem tedious, but it’s immensely valuable to sort all your tools first to see what you’re working with. Know how many tools you have, the type of tools you need to organize, and how much storage space is available in your workshop, garage, or storage space. From there, you can start to group them together in organized zones.

Put Most-Used Tools Front and Center

Naturally, you’ll want the tools and supplies you most often use in the most accessible areas of your workbench or garage. You should basically know what you reach for frequently. But if you want a clearer picture, consider writing down all of the tools and equipment you use over the span of a couple weeks or so. This will give you clear data of what tools deserve the front-and-center placement.

Keep Like Items Together

The rest of your tools and equipment may not see use as often but still need to go somewhere. You should keep them with items of a similar nature. If you have a collection of woodworking tools, those should obviously be together and away from equipment for, say, tuning and tinkering with your car. It’s easy to get forgetful and haphazardly store random items together, but you want to avoid tool crosspollination as often possible.

Get Vertical Storage

If your workshop or garage is running low on floor space for your boxes and tools, consider utilizing the open wall space with vertical storage. Cabinetry is a classic hallmark of a workshop. However, open vertical storage, such as slatwall panels or pegboards, makes finding tools and keeping them organized much easier. Magnetic tool holders on the wall are also clever storage solutions for small garages.

Utilize Clear Mason Jars

If you’re one of those dads who doesn’t like to throw away any screw, nut, bolt, or nail you come across, you need some mason jars for storage. Clear mason jars can hold all sorts of things for home décor, but they’re also great for managing small items in workshops. They provide clear, reliable, and easy storage for all the miscellaneous little things that gather in a workshop.

We hope our simple tips help you organize your tools without feeling overwhelmed. You’ll be amazed at how a few changes here and there can turn a crowded and chaotic workshop into the pinnacle of an organized workstation!
