The Benefits of Taking a First Aid Course With Your Kids

August 10, 2021 By Emily Joswiak Leave a Comment

When you think about hanging out with the kids, your mind probably goes to amusement parks, the zoo, indoor fun centers, and the like. But a first aid class? You might imagine the look of disappointment on their faces when you describe a morning or afternoon of instruction, but give them the benefit of the doubt. A first aid course is fun in the right circumstances and setting, and you’ll equip them with the skills they need. Here are the benefits of taking a first aid course with your kids.

Learning First Aid Is Never Boring

First aid and CPR courses promise excitement, engaging activities, and interesting anecdotes from the instructor. You’ll have to practice what you learn, leading to the fun of practicing techniques on each other, including bandaging, CPR, Heimlich maneuvering, splints, and more. If your kids are fascinated with such things, they’ll love learning the importance of caring for others while satiating their curiosity.

First Aid Knowledge Builds Confidence

Another one of the benefits of taking a first aid course with your kids is that kids certified in first aid and CPR are more confident about their ability to handle an emergency. Kids can learn first aid skills as young as nine years old, and a child who knows how to look out for and care for their friends is more self-assured and will view themselves as a leader in their peer group. You’re also showing that you trust them with this sort of knowledge, making it a great bonding moment.

They’ll Learn Valuable Skills

There’s no argument against learning first aid. Everyone should know the basics of providing first aid to an injured or otherwise incapacitated person until healthcare professionals arrive. First aid gives a person a fighting chance, potentially saving their life, limbs, or general health and well-being. When you equip your kids with first aid skills, you’re ensuring this doesn’t just apply to your family but all the people your kids know or meet in their lives. Other courses and camps can entertain and educate your children, but first aid prepares them for the worst life can throw at them. Who knows? They may even save your life someday.

Tips for Keeping Your Home and Family Safe

November 27, 2018 By Emma B. Joyce Leave a Comment

The main thing on many parents’ mind is providing a safe environment for their family, and they’ll do anything to achieve that. This includes more than childproofing the entire home or putting a password on your family computer. It’s all about securing your home, as well as taking care of some of the things your family likes participating in, making sure you’re all safe and sound. Sure, you can’t always be covered in bubble wrap, but you can take some precautions in order to avoid the most common safety problems.

Create a safe home

This is the first thing you need to do, and though you may think you will never get robbed, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Find a security system that will work for you and your house, and talk to your kids to make them fully understand why you’ve installed it. Instead of writing them a code on a paper or in their cellphone, try to think of a number combination every member of your family will remember. Also, it’s important that they tell you if they lose a key, so you can immediately change the locks. In addition to that, encourage your children to always lock the doors, turn on the alarm and tell you if they suspect something’s not alright.

Kitchen responsibilities

Cooking is one of the most favorite family activities, but it can also be the source of numerous hazards. One of three fires starts in the kitchen, so it’s important to realize how dangerous it can be to leave pots and pans unattended, even for just a second or two. Talk to your children and tell them the basic rules when it comes to kitchen appliances, and make sure they don’t try to cook on their own. Think about installing a smoke detector to prevent more serious accidents from happening. Learn what you can and should do if something bad happens, and how you can prevent a fire from occurring or spreading.

Think about insurance

It’s vital to have all your belongings insured, and there’s no thinking twice when it comes to making sure you’ve thought through getting the best deal. Firstly, think about house insurance and find the best company that can create the best policy for you. Apart from that, think about getting car insurance as well, because this is the way to make sure you and your family are safe during road trips or on your daily commutes. There are various insurance policies and you need to make sure you understand what your provider will and won’t cover. Read everything carefully and ask your insurer to explain every clause in the contract.

Online safety

The Internet is a great source of information, and children are using every positive aspect of accessing this knowledge quickly. Nowadays, it’s inevitable to have your children spend most of their free time online, and you won’t be able to stop that. What you can do is guide them through things they can do and tell them what they need to avoid. With all the social media, you won’t be able to control them as much, but explain that you won’t be spying on them – you just want to make sure they’re safe. Install some filters on their phones and on your home computer as well, and thus prevent them from accessing offensive sites.

Road rules

As a parent, you’re responsible for teaching your children how to behave in traffic. Whether they’re walking home from school, or simply riding a bike with their friends, they need to know all the rules. Start by teaching them to always look twice before stepping on the road and pay attention to crosswalks. Make sure they never cross at bends or run across the road just because it’s more convenient or fun. When they start riding their bike, go through the most common symbols with them and make them aware of traffic rules.

With all the responsibilities of being a parent, safety always comes first, and these are some basic tips you need to think about. Try to incorporate them into your life and, soon enough, you’ll feel the change and you’ll know your family is safer than ever before.
