The Main Reasons for Bad Gas Mileage

The Main Reasons for Bad Gas Mileage

October 23, 2020 By Emily Joswiak Leave a Comment

There may be several reasons why your car is getting awful gas mileage. Of course, if you are driving a large truck, the answer may be obvious, but for everyone else on the road, there are a few reasons your car might not be working as efficiently as it used to.

Here are a few of the main reasons for bad gas mileage and how to fix them.

Poor Tire Pressure

Your tires affect your gas mileage in multiple ways, and low tire pressure can play a large part. Thankfully, this is an easy fix. Be sure to check your tires periodically and refill them to the recommended pressure level listen in the owner’s manual.

Bad Air Intake Filters

Dirty or clogged air filters make it difficult for your car to balance the necessary amount of fuel and air it needs. Clean your air filters regularly or replace altogether so the engine can perform at its best.

Air Conditioner Overuse

If you are constantly blasting the air conditioning in the summer months, remember this also decreases your gas mileage. When possible, opt for rolling down the windows instead.

Driving Habits

Your driving habits are one of the main reasons for bad gas mileage. If you tend to drive aggressively and quickly speed up or slow down, you are wasting more fuel than necessary to get from one destination to the next. Remember that your drive is not a race, and driving cautiously can save you some extra money at the gas station.

Too Much Idling

In the winter, you may be tempted to warm up your car for a few minutes before taking off, or maybe you like to spend a few minutes decompressing in your car after work. Either way, you are wasting gas and decreasing your mileage. Despite what many people think, your vehicle will be ready to go in as little as 30 seconds in the winter, so there is no need to wait for your car to heat up.
