Even as the world goes more and more digital, it still pays to have a printer on hand to produce messages, signage, posters, and more. But your printer is only as good as the care you give it. Take the time to maintain your printer and it will deliver years of great service and beautiful prints, no matter the type or brand. Here are a few great tips for keeping your printer in good condition. Incorporate them in regularly scheduled maintenance and upkeep and the results will speak for themselves.
Keep It Clean
Everything works better when you keep it clean and tidy. Printers are no exception. First, turn it off. Next, check the document glass inside. Use a soft microfiber cloth to wipe it down if it’s dirty or has streaks. A small amount of alcohol-based glass cleaner can work but only use a small amount if there’s grease present. Afterward, use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe down any area where the toner or ink has scattered. Open the device and do the same, then use a vacuum to pick up any excess toner, paper, dust, or what have you.
Don’t Cheap Out
We understand the urge to save, but it’s best to buy brand-name toner and ink for your printer. Buying the company’s brand is best, and it ensures you’re using cartridges that are compatible with the device, preventing clogs and jams. Over time, such issues can affect the quality of your prints and diminish the printer’s life—not to mention the cost of professional cleaning or extended maintenance.
Paper Problems
Choosing the right paper is also important. Not all papers work with all printers, and inserting the wrong paper can lead to jams, which can stop printing jobs, lead to shoddy prints, and damage to the printer’s inner workings. Keep in mind that you must also properly store your paper. Keep printer paper dry by storing it in a cool dry place. Humidity can make paper tacky or curvy and wrinkled, causing jams and excess waste. Adding a dehumidifier to your storage area wouldn’t go amiss and take time to adequately stack paper in a way where you can’t damage or deform it.
Use It!
Here’s the last of our tips for keeping your printer in good condition. Be sure your printer is receiving regular use. The ink or toner inside can dry out if it sits for too long, causing issues the next time you use it. Leave it in standby mode when not in use so it doesn’t overheat and wear out faster. Finally, like any device, never shut it off abruptly. Don’t cut the power during a print job, and hit the power button when you’re done, don’t cut the cord.
