Tips for Staying Safe on the Water This Summer

Tips for Staying Safe on the Water This Summer

May 24, 2023 By Fatherhood Factor Team Leave a Comment

Your kids will be out of school this summer and looking for ways to have fun and stay cool. One way they can do that is by participating in water activities. But as a father, you must also ensure your children avoid harm. You can do that by following these tips for staying safe on the water this summer.

Always Supervise Your Children

One thing you should always do when your kids are in the water is to keep a close eye on them. No matter whether they are swimming in the ocean or a pool in your backyard, stay attentive and supervise them. You never know when they may need your help.

Make Sure They Wear Their Vests

Another tip for staying safe on the water this summer is to ensure you and your kids wear life vests when riding on a boat or a jet ski. Wearing a life vest is one of the top safety tips to reduce jet ski accidents because it helps people keep their heads above water if they fall in. It also allows others to rescue you more easily.

Don’t Drink the Water

You and your family should also avoid drinking the water no matter where you go, whether it is the ocean, the local public pool, or the small inflatable pool in your backyard. Not only can other swimmers have accidents in the water, but it can also contain germs that will make you sick.

Public pools also may have chemicals that can hurt your throat and eyes. Bring your own beverages along so your family members won’t get thirsty.

Avoid Breath-Holding Competitions

Although your kids may be competitive with each other, don’t let them engage in competitions where they try to outlast each other by holding their breath underwater. It can be harmful if they do it for long periods, leading to children hyperventilating or passing out underwater.

With these tips, you and your kids can avoid accidents in the water while you beat the summer heat. Staying safe will allow your family to make memories they will look fondly upon instead of ones they will regret.
